Resources

THE RESEARCH
In collaboration with BEAST, BioEngineering Association of STudents (graduate students), BMES now will be putting up postings of lab positions directly from the Graduate Students themselves who are looking for undergraduate assistants- if and when said graduate students contact us

General things to consider when emailing a graduate student or PI (professor) about joining their research:
Why are you interested in their lab/research topic? Keep it brief! (No essays)
How much time can you contribute this semester?
(if lab position is for a year, can you project to next semester?)
Send a Resume/CV (these should mention the following):
What (if any) experiences do you have which might apply?
What relevant coursework (if any) have you taken or are taking?
Lab courses?
    Other time commitments?
    GPA?

For more listings and details, go to Research Listings
... \\Sp '10 update// Unfortunately, it seems that none of the BEAST students have been posting up positions on their side, so we are unable to list anymore than the one below...
...However, the questions above are still good things to keep in mind if you take the initiative to email professors with the kinds of research you are interested in! Or if you choose to take advantage of the programs available in Berkeley and at other schools:
URAP (semester), URO (semester), SURF (summer), BSBRP (summer), SUPERB (summer), Amgen Scholars (summer), etc...

ALUMNI DATABASE
We're starting to compile a list of BioE alumni!
> Seniors and Alumni!
Please fill out this form, it'll only take a minute! We would love to keep in touch with all our alumni, and with your permission, pass on questions from current students regarding what you're doing now. (Your contact information will not be publicly listed).
> Current Students!
Once we get this going, we'll be putting up a list of names and what they're up to. If you've questions, your questions can be passed on to them.

SOURCES AND RESOURCES

Periodically, we'll be posting up resources, opinions/tips and other interesting miscellany relevant to the bioengineer. Check it out below!

Pre-med/dentistry/etc? A few interesting links!

As I, the current webmistress, am not a pre-health student, I sometimes get annoyed by getting a bit too much information and spammed by resources about how to be a good pre-health student...
Then I realized, I might as well just pass them on to people who might actually use them, so here's a few really good resources/links that I've seen:

The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP)

The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is a free six week summer academic enrichment program for freshman and sophomore college students who are interested in a career in medicine or dentistry. The program is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with direction and technical assistance provided by the AAMC and the American Dental Education Association.

To apply and for additional information visit our website at:
www.smdep.org or call the National Program Office toll-free at (866) 587-6337.

Application Deadline: March 1st
Early application strongly encouraged!

University of Michigan School of Dentistry & Medical School-
Profile for Success (PFS) Program

Profile for Success is an intensive 6-week educational enrichment and skill development summer residential program for highly motivated 3rd, 4th years and recent graduates from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds.  Students with a demonstrated interest in serving the underserved are also eligible to apply.

For information and to download program applications, please visit: www.med.umich.edu/medschool/diversity/pfs.html

International Service Learning (ISL)

The ISL sends medical/dent/opt/public health/PT/vet/pharmaceutical teams to countries in Latin America, Central America, and Africa.  We include pre-health students on our teams as a way of preparing the next generation of international medical caregivers.  Students receive supervised hands-on experience, health related seminars, and financial sponsorship.

A Summer of Work, of Study, of Research, of Fun...

posted Sep 15, 2008 2:24 AM by Biomedical Engineering Society   [ updated Sep 26, 2008 6:35 PM ]

Well... It's about 3 weeks into the semester and school's definitely got us all back into the swing of working and studying, of late nights but hopefully not last minute homework. =D

But before we let this Fall semester drive us too crazy, we here in BMES are reflecting on what we did this past summer. And it was a lot. So scroll on down and read what a number of us did this summer. If you ever need ideas on what do over the summer, if you (like Amanda who refuses to take summer session) aren't taking classes or find yourself (like Joyce) ending spring semester without a concrete plan in mind, here's a place to pull some ideas from!

A Summer in Haiku
Steven Zhao (Internal VP)

Want to be SMART?
Micheal Lin (External VP)

I had a job, in a BioTech Company...
Jason Keller (President)

Dude, I worked two jobs this summer.
Spencer Price (Treasurer)

你好! 我是個台美人!
(I)
Amanda Chou (Webmistress/Historian)

H! I'm an Taiwanese-American!
(II)
Debbie Hung (Secretary)

Duhnahnahnahnahnah! BATMAN!
Margaret Wei (Social Chair)

Oh! I'm up on the hill.

Ritchie Chen (Academic Co-chair)

Not-So-Rainy-Seattle

Bo He (Corporate Chair)

Beware, a lot of us ended up talking about RESEARCH (and maybe elsewhere: not Berkeley and not home; In fact, at least 4 of us went out-of-state!)
