Michael Lin (External VP) I flew out to Houston this summer to participate in a medical research internship. As a SMART student at Baylor Med, I researched full time for 9 weeks. However, the most beneficial aspect of the program were outside of lab- the daily lunch seminars (hearing about cutting-edge field in a broad spectrum of medicine), career exploration events (grad school night, Chat-with-a-doc, med school app workshop with the deans, shadowing doctors), and opportunities to observe the collaboration between doctors and scientists. The experience at Baylor helped me determine my goals by allowing me to explore my interests. While I wasn't at the medical center, I spend time with the other 90 or so students in the program at our dorm two blocks away. It was a great setup that led to a wonderful atmosphere, conducive for great evenings, blasting weekends, and camaraderie between students from states all over the states. Starting early last December, I began looking for summer programs online and it turned out to be an invaluable experience, worth all the time spent filling out those applications. |
